The French Bulldog History
Utility Group
There is a difference of opinion as to the orgin of the French Bulldog, but one
ancestor must have been the English Bulldog - probably one of the toy variety,
of which there were a great number in England around 1860. These toy Bulldogs were sent in large numbers into France, where they were crossed with various other breeds and were given the name Boule-Dog Francais. One found
dogs with rose ears, while others had bat ears which is now an outstanding
feature of the French Bulldog. Another distinctive feature of the French Bull-
-dog is the skull. The correctly formed skull should be level, or flat, between
the ears, while directly above the eyes, exstending almoust across the forehead, it should be slightly curve, giving a domed appearance. in the early
days of breeding in Europe, the tendency was toward the rose ear, This
movement was opposed by Americans, and the breed would eventually lose the
feature that strongly accentuates it's individuality, and the result would have
been practically a miniature English Bulldog.
This controversy over type was responsible for the formation of the French Bulldog
Club of America, the first organization in the world devoted to the breed. In 1897 fanciers gave a specialty show in the ballroom of the waldorf-Astoria. The affair was a sensation, and it was due, no doubt, to the resulting publicicity that the little chaps became the rage in society. ( Written by AKC )

French Bulldogs health issues
Heat stroke: Occurs when the body temperature exceeds 107 degrees for more than a
few minutes. Frenchies are easily over heated in hot weather because their only
significant way of relessing excess body heat is though panting. So please keep your dog
cool in hot weather.
Cherry Eye: When the gland of the third eyelid pops out of position, It protudes from
behind the eyelid as a reddish mass. this prolapsed tear gland condition is commonly
referred to as " Cherry Eye". The problem is seen primarily in young dogs. for more info on
Brachycephalic Syndrome: If you own a Pug, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Bulldog or one of the breeds with pushed in"faces you should become familiar with this word. The word is from Greek roots. "Brachy." meaning short and Cephalic," meaning head. Brachycephalic breeds are characterized by brachycephalic respiratury syndrome,"which affects the different area of the respiratory tract frortunately, most dogs do not suffer from all aspects of the syndrome but, you should be aware of which your particular pet may have.
Elongated Soft Palate: This is a problem frequently seen in French Bulldogs. The soft
palate is a flap of mucousal tissue which closes off the animal's airway ( nasopharynx )
during swallowing to prevent food and liguids from going into their lungs. It is difficult to
fit the soft tissues of the canine mouth and throat into the brachycephalic's short face. as a result, the soft palate which separates nasal passage from oral cavity flaps. virtually
all brachycephalics suffer from this but, except in bulldogs actual respiratory distress is rare, Excess borking or panting may lead to swelling in the throat which can, in turn, lead to trouble.
Hemivertebrae & Intervertebral Disc Deisease: Premature degeneration of the intervertebral discs, like hemivertebrae, is an all too-common problem in French Bulldogs
In Sweden, research indicates that Frenchies are second only to Dachshunds in the incidence of disc disease, proportionate to the breed's population sizes. No data are
available for the frequency of the condition in the United States Frenchie population; but
it seems to be high here as well. ( By Jan Grebe) for more info on this and other disease go to the
Patellar Luxation: The petella,or kneecap is part of the stifle joint (knee). In patellar
luxation, The kneecap luxates, or pops out of place, ether in medial or lateral position.
Bilateral involvement is most common, but unilateral is not uncommon, Animals can be
affected by the time they are 8 weeks of age, The most notable finding is a knock-knee
(genu valgum) stance. The patella is usually reducible, and laxity of the mebial collateral
ligament may be evident. The medial retinacular tissues of the stifle joint are often
thickend, and the foot can be seen to twist laterally as weight is placed on the limb.

Caring for your Frenchies
Grooming: French Bulldogs don't require a lot of grooming. just some occasional brushing
keeps the coat shiny.
Bathing: I bath once a month to keep my Frenchies clean and oder free.
Ears & Wrinkles: Do regular cleaning of ears with a cleansing agent prescribed by the vet DO NOT us Q tips in the ears. Clean deep facial folds, this will prevent these sensitive areas from becoming irritated.
Eyes: Should be clear, bright and free from discharge & inflammation. Never red or inflamed, eyes or inner eyelide matter 'STUCK' on the surface or in the corners of eyes.
Nails: Regular nail trimming is a must since Frenchies don't usually wear their nails down
by running.
1.Frenchies should not be left to run free, and should be in a fenced area or on a leash..
2.Some Frenchies can swim, but most can't.So never leave them unattended around water.
3.They need dailY exercise to stay in shap.
